Victorian kids are lifting their game in Underwater Hockey. With the 2018 Australian Underwater Water Hockey Championships to be held in Perth (from 9-13 January) Victorian clubs are working hard to increase the pool of new players.
Our latest training camp, held last weekend June 3-4, at the Geelong Grammar School’s excellent Handbury Centre pool was a ripper event, thoroughly enjoyed by kids across the state from Portland to Wonthaggi.
Mr Stuart McCallum, the coordinator of the event, said that “The Wonthaggi Club has long been the most reliable source of young underwater hockey players in Victoria and they brought 15 strong young kids. Geelong has really picked up this year and we had six keen kids attending. The Monash Univeristy club provided eight and Jayme Cannon ably represented Portland by taking out the U19 Best New Player award.”
Saturday provided the players with a chance to meet their coaches, Lucy Perdomo for U15 and Kevin Chisholm for U19 and to practice a few skills. Sunday was more intense with work being undertaken on position play and team tactics.
The weekend finished with a very pleasant sail aboard the catamaran Duo thanks to the generosity of the skipper, Doug Escott.
A story on the weekend appeared in the Geelong Advertiser on 6 June 2017.
